Your kids’ bedroom should be a space that is inviting and fun, because it’s not just where your kids sleep at the end of the day, it’s where they go to have ideas, dream and be creative.

We spoke to our Design Manager John Care to get his top tips on how to create a feel of excitement in your child’s bedroom.

Today the sense of fun, wonder and excitement in a child’s bedroom comes more from the overall feel of the room rather than specific colours or a strong theme.

“The colour palette tends to be quite light and neutral, with the personality and character coming from the accessories, artwork and bedlinen. It’s the combination of colours, materials, textures and patterns that creates the feel and mood of the room.

Colours tend to be more gender-neutral today, with the accessories telling the story about who the room belongs to. Nurseries too are quite neutral, maybe accessorised with a just a hint of colour depending on whether it’s a boy or a girl.”

As well as essentials such as a bed, chest of drawers and maybe a bookcase, shelf and bedside cabinet, we’re seeing features such as colourful bunting in children’s bedrooms and reading corners with bean bags.

“Other on-trend design elements include tepees, canopies above girls’ beds, ballet bars, fairy lights and modern, sleek bedframes. Artwork is getting more innovative, with three-dimensional objects rather than simply a flat picture or painting.

“Wallpaper and murals are still popular, and not so heavily themed as they might once have been. Items such as a wall-mounted surfboard or skateboard are popular too, while feature hooks on the wall are both popular and practical.” John said.

Furniture placement is very dependent on how parents want their children to use the room. It’s good to look ahead, as one day it might be floor space needed for playing, but later down the track it becomes space for a study desk.

At the end of the day a kids’ bedroom should be inviting and fun. It can’t be stale and boring. It’s where youngsters can have ideas and dream. Bring your child along on the design journey so they can get excited, contribute ideas and enjoy seeing those ideas come to life.
