Since 2020, it has become common practice for people to have the option to work from home, making it more important than ever to have a dedicated office space at home.

While flopping on the couch with the laptop might be easy, it’s far from ideal for long-term use. Setting up a purpose-built area with a simple desk and great storage is not only on-trend, but it also makes good sense. Our backs will thank us for it and there’s every chance we’ll feel more organised, too.

The ABN Display and New Product Manager, John Care said the most important things to consider when creating a dedicated home office is a desk, great storage and a comfy chair.

A simple desk, great storage and a comfortable, supportive chair are the basics of any good home office. Paying attention to the height of your desk and chair is important if you want to keep your spine, and your back, neck and shoulder muscles happy. Lighting is another important consideration as good lighting will help you avoid eyestrain and headaches. Natural light from a window is ideal and a desk lamp will provide task lighting when you need it.”

Worried about distractions?

The location of your home office can play a big part in how focused you’ll stay at your desk! It’s easier to concentrate when the work space is away from the busy areas of the home, like the kitchen, alfresco or theatre room. If your clients come to the house, you might want separate access straight into the office so they don’t have to walk through your family space. Setting up the home office in a room near the front door can also help keep you in work mode.

Tips for maximising space and storage

We say drawers in a home office are a must, helping to keep everything neat and tidy, making sure your working space is organised and not full of clutter. A purpose-built filing drawer can easily be integrated into the cabinetry, and there are even clever ways to conceal a printer and computer when they’re not in use. Floating shelves make good use of space above the desk while showing off items such as photos and books. You might want to add a pin board or mood board to help keep you organised and inspired.
