Life can change a lot over 25 years so if you’re building your forever home, you should consider how it will adapt to your lifestyle through the years. One day, your fur baby might have the run of the house, then the next your family has grown and suddenly you have little handprints all over your glass doors. Before you know it, you blink and you’re an empty nester (that is until they need a place to crash for a while!).

Your forever home should be able to cater for all these life stages. Here’s our top 3 must-haves for building your forever home.

1. Create zones

Design a home that can expand or contract with the amount of people living in it by creating two defined wings with doors that separate the zones.  When you’ve got a full house, it can keep noise to a minimum or give your guests a bit of privacy. When you have the house to yourself, you can close off that section, so it doesn’t need to be cleaned and it keeps energy bills low.

2. Design flexible secondary living areas

The way your living areas are used may change over the years depending on who is living in your home. A multipurpose room is the perfect blank canvas that can change as your life does.

Movie buffs can create a bit of hush in the home by closing the barn doors and using it as a theatre room to watch their favourite flicks and get cosy on the couch (did somebody say popcorn and Maltesers?)

Mums and Dads can make their kids dreams come true by turning it into a fabulous playroom. Everyone knows how hard it is to stop the toys spilling out into the adult spaces so you can keep the kids entertained with their very own outdoor play area that can be accessed through the sliding doors.

Students can use it as a peaceful space to hide away to study, away from the day-to-day hustle and bustle of the house.

Retirees can embrace their freedom and use their extra time to try things they’ve always wanted to do but never had the time to, like a dedicated painting, sewing or crafts room.

3. Supersize your storage

It’s inevitable that over 25 years you’ll need more and more storage, especially if you add kids or grandies to the mix. A forever home should have a decent amount of storage built in so you can minimise clutter and store all the things you treasure like, favourite teddies, awards and artwork.
