Background: Martin bought the bungalow with a view to improving the existing property and subdividing the back garden. Built in 1932 on a 677sqm block, the original house was a tiny two-bedroom, one-bathroom home with a lounge, separate dining room and small kitchen. Across the back of the house was an old ‘sleep out’, enclosed verandah and laundry.

Need: Keen to maximise the potential of a big block in one of Perth’s popular inner-city suburbs, Martin was confident he could slice off a portion of the garden to create a separate 234sqm block to build on. The sale of this new block would fund a major renovation project on the old house. Not only would the project realise the full potential of the house and the remaining 443sqm, but it would also give Martin a bigger, more functional home to enjoy with his son and their two dogs.

Solution: The sleep out, enclosed verandah and old laundry were demolished, clearing the way for a contemporary new addition. Almost doubling the size of the bungalow, the extension includes an open-plan living and meals area, and a stylish new kitchen, scullery and laundry. Sliding doors open up to a new alfresco and there has even been room to add a backyard pool. Features of the extension include a skillion roof and shadowline cornice. The tiling has been kept the same throughout to help blend the new areas with the existing home. The old kitchen, dining room and living room have been turned into a luxurious master suite complete with a freestanding bath in the ensuite. To save money, Martin lived in the house during the 6-8 months it took to transform the house. The Dale’s team partitioned off the construction zone, making sure Martin had a working bathroom and kitchenette area to use.
