The original architect designed home had a distinct ‘Fremantle” feel, but was too small for the owners growing needs. The brief from the owners was to create a completely new modern kitchen and family area at the rear of the home which could be used throughout the year. In addition the owners were open to using a range of innovative materials to both complement the original character of the home and to add architectural interest and focal points to the design.
With the house sitting on a narrow small block the addition of a second storey was the only solution to being able add more space and turn it from a three bedroom, one bathroom home into a four bedroom, two bathrooms. The addition of the second storey also created a haven and ideal space for parents wanting a quiet space away from the main living areas.
The master suite is reminiscent of a resort style retreat with the spacious master bedroom featuring high pitched ceiling, large windows overlooking the entertaining area, huge walk in robe and luxury ensuite; all which can be accessed via a wooden stair case from the downstairs living area.
The staircase, which leads from the living area to the master suite, faces north and features a wall of glass, adding another unique dimension allowing the northern light to stream in and warm the home.
The owners have chosen neutral browns and creams for their new ensuite. A long bench top complete with twin in-set basins means there is plenty of room to go around. The ensuite is beautifully styled with bath, shower, WC and feature windows complete with shutters; all essential elements of a true parents retreat.
The new modern kitchen has been revamped and says style with a difference. The island bench containing the oven, cooktop and stylish rangehood is a unique design and has become a focal point of the kitchen and its configuration means that the cook doesn’t miss out on family interaction.
The kitchen and lounge area are both set in contemporary colours with black, dark grey and wood being the focus. The glass bi-fold doors located off the living area open up onto a great alfresco deck, and is perfect for an every day dinner or entertaining, and come winter, close the doors and allow the afternoon sun to warm the room.
This award winning renovation is certainly not your typical extension and could easily be featured in an architect’s journal.
