Nautical theme delights

The West Australia, New Homes - 17th July 2010
By Ann McRae

A new nautical theme was created for this high set Sorrento home that has wide ocean views from a new bedroom level.

Nautical theme delightsDale Alcock Home Improvements were careful to keep with the theme in designing the addition that required a new storey added to the home.

The new level is totally taken up with a big bedroom and ensuite bathroom and all enjoy ocean views from windows on three sides.

The original home had exposed brickwork that has been covered with a stippled render and painted aqua blue.

Cladding panels form a central feature column in a shade of grey and limestone capping completed the beach theme up the entry stairway.

Arches that gave the original home an Italian look have been removed and a series of four port hole windows features on the end of the two living levels set above a big garage.

The owner worked with the builder to whiten and brighten the original rooms with lots of white paint, white carpet and a new white kitchen.Nautical theme delights-1

The renovation remodelled the balcony off the living room adding two porthole spaces that are repeated in two opaque glazed windows rising beside the new open timber staircase.

The bedroom upstairs is all white including the carpet with windows positioned to give a clear ocean view while reclining in bed.

The open staircase is a custom-made design from Tasmanian oak with stainless steel wiring in the balustrade continuing the nautical theme.

There is an open ensuite on the eastern side of this level with a bath and matching vanity that also provides ocean views for a bather through clever window positioning over the staircase.

The shower was designed to be deep enough not to need a screen and there is a powder room and walk-in robe tucked into a corner off the bathroom.

Nautical theme delightsDeep eaves were designed for the new roofline to give weather protection near the coast and to match the eaves on other levels of the house.

As the house is positioned behind a street front house it was not possible to use a crane on the common driveway so extensive scaffolding was installed.

The owner is delighted with the finished home that can be locked up while he enjoys an overseas cruise.
